24 notesGross Magic - Sweetest Touch
Brighton based bedroom maverick Gross Magic is giving away a preview cut from new EP ‘Teen Jamz’.
Somewhere across the past 18 months R Kelly has become a major touchstone for new artists. Don’t ask why, or how but it seems that a new breed of bedroom producers have emerged building on the grave of R&B.
How To Dress Well is an obvious example, with Chad Valley’s elastic jams another decent introduction. Hailing from Brighton, Gross Magic seems to take his cue from Prince, Michael Jackson and more.
Deranged bedroom pop, Gross Magic (real name Sam McGarrigle) has been making waves online for a while now. Departing previous band Hocus Pocus, the producer decided to make pure pop.
Using very basic equipment, his lo-fi approach distorts R&B into new sounds. Throw in a few savage guitar riffs and Gross Magic at times begin to recall the ‘Mellow Gold’ period in Beck’s output.
‘Teen Jamz’ will be released on purple seven inch by UK label The Sounds Of Sweet Nothing, and a preview is available online now. You can pre-order the release on Bandcamp, but the producer is also making new track ‘Stweetest Touch’ available as a download.
Gross Magic will release ‘Teen Jamz’ on August 8th. Tracklisting:
1. We’re Awake Tonight
2. Teen Jamz
3. Sweetest Touch (Free Download)
4. Can’t Ignore My Heart
5. Dream Gurl
6. P.Y.T
7. Sick
8. Yesterdays
Ummm… WHAT the fuck… R. Kelly? Prince? Jacko???
If you listen to this clip, maybe you’ll see what I mean - but what the FUCK does this music have to do with R. Kelly ??? Also - calling something “pure pop” doesn’t make it so. What kind of weird hipster cred shit is this - name-dropping these artists doesn’t make you cool. Fuck outta here.
